Description

Merwida
The winery Merwida is from the Van der Merwe family. In 1840 they emigrated from Dordrecht to South Africa. In Dordrecht, they had a castle on the Merwede River. Now the family lives on the Breede River which, unusually enough, is very similar to the river their ancestors had on their estate in the Netherlands. The 7th generation of winemakers now runs the company. They make beautiful wines while preserving nature, taking care of the Papenkuils Wetland, the protected nature area at the Breede River, which is why they were named WWF Champion by the World Wildlife Fund.

Papenkuils
Within the boundaries of the wine estate of the van der Merwe family you will find Papenkuils Wetland. In this nature reserve there are many unique species of flora and fauna, such as the Waterblommetje a typical South African delicacy. The van der Merwe family financially supports the preservation of the wetland and its unique flora and fauna as part of the history and cultural heritage of South Africa.
